Department of Arizona DAV & DAVA News

This news feed chronicles the progress of the Department's program to bring claims service to Veterans of the Navajo Nation. This is the first Native American location selected for this new program, with the first remote claims station installed and active two days each week at Pinon, AZ. Read more HERE!

The Commanders from AZ American Legion, AZ VFW, AZ DAV, and the UAV Chair, along with the AZ DAV Adjutant and three state-level organization legislative representatives visited the offices of Senators and Representatives to advocate for changes to proposed SB and HB dropping in Committee next week. Department Adjutant Carl Forkner and Chapter 8 CSO Debbie Roberts traveled to Globe--a town near the very edge of their area about 70 miles away from Chapter 8--to provide information and claims services to local Veterans and their families. This was the precursor to introduction of remote videoconference claims service to the community. Read more HERE!

On March 31st, DAV East Valley Chapter 8 Commander Lynn Burnett was installed by Department Adjutant Carl Forkner as the Department's new Junior Vice Commander. Lynn will serve out the rest of this year's term that was left vacant by the prior Junior Vice Commander's resignation. See more HERE!

On May 27th, two of our Chapter leaders were honored by Congressman Juan Ciscomani in a ceremony in Tucson, AZ. Four years ago, Congressman Ciscomani initiated the Veteran Servant Leader award program, designed to recognize Veterans who continue to serve their communities after they retire or are discharged from the military with an honorable discharge. DAV Department of Arizona and our State DAV Auxiliary were both awarded streamers for attaining--and surpassing--their 2025-2026 membership rectuiment goals.

Put on order this spring, the wheelchair-accessible golf cart will be in place at the Tucson VA Medical Center in August or September to provide services to Veterans in wheelchairs and scooters. The cart can take multiple wheelchairs at a time, has seating for caregivers or ambulatory patients, and includes an all-weather cover for the rainy season.

DAV National Commander Coleman Nee flew out to Arizona to learn more about the work Department of Arizona is doing to serve our Native American Veteran community. On Tuesday, July 14th, he was escorted by National 2nd Junior Vice Commander and Department of Arizona Judge Advocate/PDC Glenn Hohman and current Department Senior Vice Commander Rod Hage to see the new office space at the Kayenta Townhall Annex. The next day, July 15th, Commander Nee observed the Department's work with Navajo Veterans and survivors at the first remote station established on the Reservation, in Pinon, at the Pinon Veterans Wellness Center Hogan.
